Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 10 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and four were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 10 of the drivers while South Hilo and Puna officers arrested seven in each district, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala and North Kohala arrested two motorists in each district while Ka‘u officers arrested one.
So far this year, there have been 574 DUI arrests compared with 702 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 481 major accidents so far this year compared with 598 during the same period last year.
Twelve fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, 13 people had perished.
